Bretagne Next, a partner in the Interreg NWE Wind4Shipping project, and the Wind Ship Association brought together a delegation of stakeholders from the wind-powered maritime transport sector on 16 and 17 March, as part of a session entitled “Wind propulsion: the EU’s next industrial success story?”.
Three Breton industrial companies, including CORMORAN, were invited to join this European delegation, hosted by Christophe Clergeau in his capacity as Co-Chair of The SEArica Intergroup.
During the session, the sector had the opportunity to showcase its achievements and growing maturity, while highlighting the support needed to scale up the industry in Europe and enable it to make its full contribution to the decarbonisation of maritime transport.
Scaling up to an industrial level requires public-sector support at several levels.
At regional level, Daniel Cueff, Vice-President of the Brittany Regional Council in charge of the Sea and Coast, highlighted the Brittany Region’s commitment through the adoption of a wind propulsion roadmap and the allocation of quayside berths in ports to accommodate wind-powered vessels.
At national level, Minister Catherine Chabaud highlighted the allocation of part of the revenues from the carbon market to a maritime decarbonisation fund, a fund whose importance to the sector cannot be overstated.
At European level, the EU institutions also have a key role to play in supporting the development of this industrial sector, whose potential is enormous.
“Working at European level to promote territorial development and the development of sectors that address the European Union’s policy priorities is at the very heart of the Interreg programme,”
reminded MEP Raquel Garcia Hermida-van der Walle.
The wind propulsion sector is becoming increasingly structured and industrialised, and Brittany is fully embracing its role as a driving force at European level.
